Honest answers to the questions we hear most
No question here is treated as silly. These are the same things every friend has asked before they got started.

Is it too late for me to learn this?
No. Everything in this guide was written to be understood by someone who has never used AI before. There's no prior technical knowledge assumed anywhere on this site.
Will this cost me money?
No. Every tool recommended in these guides is free to download and free to use — Ollama, AnythingLLM, Open WebUI, LM Studio. There is no trial period and no account to create. The only thing you spend is the disk space a model takes up, usually a few gigabytes.
The one place money can enter the picture is if you choose to use a cloud service alongside your local setup. Chapter 04 covers how to keep that at or near zero.
Is AI going to read my personal files without me knowing?
A local model, run through Ollama, only looks at what you explicitly show it and only when you ask. It has no independent access to your computer, your email, or your files. The privacy risk people worry about mostly comes from cloud services, which is exactly why this site leads with local, private tools.
Do I need a powerful, expensive computer?
No. A computer with 8GB of memory can run a smaller local AI model comfortably, and most machines sold in the last five or six years meet that easily. More memory lets you run better models, but it is not the price of entry. Chapter 02 walks through exactly what to expect on an ordinary machine.
Is it safe to ask AI about medical or financial questions?
An offline, local AI session (Chapter 03) is a safe, private place to organize your thoughts and prepare good questions. It is not a substitute for a doctor, lawyer, or financial advisor, and it can be confidently wrong. Use it to think, then bring your conclusions to a qualified professional.
What's the difference between a "local model" and the AI I hear about on the news?
The AI most often in the news — the large "frontier" models — run on enormous, distant computers and are generally more capable, but require sending your questions over the internet. A local model runs on your own, much smaller computer and is more modest in ability. This site's philosophy is to use local options by default and reach for frontier models only when a task truly calls for it.
My browser and phone keep adding AI features I never turned on. Can I stop that?
Yes, and it's usually a half hour of work. Most browsers and operating systems now have a single master switch that disables AI features, including ones added in later updates. Chapter 05 walks through where those switches tend to live and which features are worth leaving alone.
I got a call from a relative in trouble asking for money urgently. Was it real?
Hang up and call them back on the number already saved in your phone — not the number that called you, which can be faked. A voice can now be copied convincingly from a few seconds of audio, so how the voice sounds tells you nothing. The Staying Safe section covers this in full, including the family code word that makes these calls harmless.
Do you sell anything, or make money from this site?
No. There are no products, no affiliate links, no advertising, and no data collection anywhere on this site. It exists purely to help people learn.
Where should I actually start?
Start with Chapter 02, Local Models with Ollama. Everything in Part One builds on having a private model running on your own computer.
If you'd rather not run anything at all, Chapter 05 and the Staying Safe section stand completely on their own and need no setup.
