Written by someone who was skeptical too.
This site started as notes for a small circle of friends who kept asking the same questions: "Is AI too hard to learn? Where do I start? What can it really do for me?"
Who this is for
You've likely heard AI described two ways: as a job-stealing, privacy-destroying threat, or as an essential tool you're falling behind on. Neither framing is honest, and both are exhausting.
This site is for anyone who wants a third option: understand what AI actually does, decide for yourself where it earns a place in your life, and keep control of your information the entire time.
Most of the people this site was written for enjoy running things on their own computers rather than relying on big cloud services by default. If that describes you, you're exactly who we had in mind.
What we believe
- Privacy is not negotiable. If a guide asks you to send your personal documents to a company server, we say so plainly, and we show you the private alternative first.
- Local before cloud. A model running on your own machine minimizes your cost per use and answers to no one. We treat that as the default, not the exception.
- Frontier models are tools, not oracles. The large, well-known AI systems are genuinely useful for certain jobs. We'll tell you which ones, and how to use them without waste.
- Understanding beats fear. You don't need to become an engineer. You need enough understanding to make your own good decisions.
Why call it "avoid-ai.com" if the point is to embrace AI?
Because that's the normal instinct for most of us. "Avoid it" is the easy, understandable reaction to something confusing and hyped-up. This site exists to gently replace that instinct with a better one: approach it carefully, on your own terms. The name is a reminder of where most of us started — including whoever is reading this today.
What you will never find on this site
No sign-up walls, no email harvesting, no affiliate links, no sponsored tools, no "premium" version. This is an education project, full stop. If that ever changes, this page will say so — and it won't.
